Review: Jury Duty (TV Mini Series)

A touching mockumentary where the jury duty becomes a laughing matter.

Comedy

The opening statement

In 2021, the production team of Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, known for their work on ‘The Office’, posted an ad on Craigslist. They were seeking volunteers to serve on a jury in a real trial and participate in interviews documenting their experiences within the American judicial system. Despite receiving over 2,500 volunteers, only one was selected. Little did he know that he would eventually become a part of an Emmy Award-nominated TV show. That individual is Ronald Gladden, a former solar contractor based in Los Angeles, and an elaborate fake trial was specifically created for him.

Improvisation and absurdity

“11 Actors, One Jury”

The show’s strength lies in the remarkable performances of the actors, as they maintain their characters throughout the trial. Whether scripted or not, these actors can improvise and react to the unexpected. To enhance the illusion, the show primarily casts actors who typically play extras. Even the judge is a former lawyer who transitioned to acting. The sole exception is James Marsden (known for his roles in “Hairspray,” “X-Men,” and “Enchanted”), who portrays himself as the egotistical superstar.

They struck a delicate balance between scripted and improvisational moments. The characters often display spontaneity, and it seamlessly fits into the storyline. Naturally, Ronald Gladden faces moments of doubt in the face of such absurdity, but he finds reassurance in moments of sanity. I also appreciate the fact that the actors, not Ronald Gladden, become the subjects of humor.

Emotions

As we progress through the show, it evolves into a touching story without delving into the trial’s specifics. The characters are often caricatures, yet some of them reveal unexpected depths, and Madden’s reactions to certain events create heartwarming moments. There are instances when the actors briefly break character, such as during the defense video, which they didn’t see beforehand. I appreciate that they included these moments in the montage. As you can imagine, I’ll leave the show’s conclusion for you to discover on your own.

Conclusion

I can’t emphasize enough what a great experience it was. I’m unsure if a second season is needed; the show’s concept is too unique to be repeated. It must have been a difficult task to hide a reality tv show in plain sight. A second season might be too obvious in my opinion.

With 8 episodes, each lasting 20 minutes, it’s perfect for your evening TV. You can find it on Amazon Freevee, and I highly recommend it.
